HOW TO CHOOSE PORTOBELLO MUSHROOMS
For example, when choosing portobello mushrooms, pick large mushrooms similar in size. Since mushrooms shrink when cooked, if you buy the smaller ones, they won't cook evenly or resemble fries.
Then, make sure the portobellos mushrooms are firm, with unblemished caps. The gills (the brown gills inside the mushroom cap) should be dry, which indicates freshness. Next, make sure the mushrooms do not have a slimy film, which means they are beginning to spoil. Last but not least, store mushrooms in the packaging provided by the store or a paper bag to maintain freshness.

Fried Portobello Mushroom Recipe
My family and I are huge mushrooms lovers. We love them in spaghetti sauce, salads, and just eating them by themselves. The other day, after seeing some portobello mushrooms for a decent price, I decided to try my hand at making my own friend portobello mushrooms!
Fried Portobello Mushroom Recipe
- Portobello Mushrooms
- Flour
- Parmesan Cheese
- 2 Eggs
- Oil For The Deep Fryer
- Place a bottle of oil in the deep fryer and start it up, or put the oil in a Dutch oven over medium on the stove.
- Put 1 cup of flour in 1 bowl, 1 cup of Parmesan cheese in another bowl, and beat 2 eggs in a separate bowl.
- Slice your portobello mushrooms, if they aren&rsquot already. First dip your sliced mushrooms in the flour, then the egg mixture, then in the Parmesan cheese. Put on a plate until ready to deep fry. Refill the flour and Parmesan cheese as needed until all of the mushrooms are coated.
- Place the coated mushrooms in the fry basket or in the Dutch oven. Fry for 5-6 minutes or until golden brown.
These mushrooms are a perfect appetizer for any get-togethers you have coming up, or just because! I love the crispiness of them, and the added flavor of Parmesan cheese is amazing! These will definitely be made again and again in our household! I hope that you enjoy them as much as we did!

1. Choose and prepare the mushrooms
I am using a combination of shimeiji, button, king oyster, and portobello mushrooms. However, this is only my preference as you can stir-fry any mushrooms.
Here are some suggestions when you choose the type of mushrooms:
- Cut the king oyster mushrooms into thin slices or small dices. Since this mushroom is harder than button mushrooms and portabello, you have to either blanch it in water for a minute before sauteing or stir-fried for a few minutes until it turns soft before mixing with other softer mushrooms. I am using the second method (stir-frying a little longer for simplicity.
- Cut the larger mushroom into a smaller size, so that they will cook through at about the same time.
- Choose a few types of mushrooms with different shapes to make it more visually appealing.
- Use mushrooms with a different texture to make it more interesting. For example, use soft button mushroom, the tougher enoki mushrooms, and king oyster mushroom that is chewy.
- If you choose to add dried Shiitake mushrooms, soak it until they are fully hydrated before use. Cut away the hard stem. You may want to discard the stem or slice it thinly for stir-frying.
Vegan Baby Portobello Mushroom Bites Recipe
Vegan Portobello mushrooms are a vegan's dream! Create an amazing appetizer your family will rave about with these Vegan Portobello Mushroom Bites. My family loves them, and although I generally take them to parties, my family asks for them for dinner.
Mushrooms contain a high level of antioxidants. Selenium, a mineral not found in most fruits and vegetables, is found in mushrooms. Selenium helps the enzymes in the liver function. Furthermore, Selenium is also known to reduce tumor size and reduce inflammation. In other words, eat your 'shrooms!
Mushrooms are also fat-free and have a variety of purposes in a plant-based diet. They can be grilled, baked, sautéed you can stuff them, slice them, and use them crumbled for a meat-textured replacement. Versatile, mushrooms are absorbent, so they take on the flavor of any marinade. They are used for vegan bacon, vegan steak, and the list goes on.
This particular recipe is an appetizer, but the same filling can be used for a full-sized portobello mushroom for a meal. I took these to a party, and they disappeared in minutes.
Baby Portobello Mushroom Bites are easy to make and quick to cook. You can also make the filling in advance and stuff your mushrooms prior to cooking if you wish. Depending on if you are making them at home, or you plan to take them to a party, you may want to cook them at your desired destination. Check Vegan Portobello Mushroom Recipe.
